The Cypriot Municipality Limassol was officially named European city of sport for 2020. The recognition comes from ACES Europe – the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. The title is awarded to a municipality that has an official population ranging between 25,000 and 499,999 inhabitants.

The winning municipality is chosen according to its adherence to the principles of responsibility and ethics, its awareness to the fact that sport is a key factor for aggregation of the society, its efforts in improving the quality of life and the psycho-physical well-being of its citizens and its achievements in completing the integration of different social classes in the community.

ACES Europe is a sports organisation based in Brussels and annually bestows its recognition to different European towns since 2001. ACES Europe is also an official partner of the European Commission in the organization of the European Week of Sport.

The President of ACES Europe Gian Francesco Lupattelli has sent a letter to Nicos Nicolaides, Mayor of Limassol informing him about the good news. In the letter, Lupattelli congratulated the municipality for organising a big variety of sport events and promoting sports tourism.
